What motivates me...

We asked Health-on-Line customer and Bournemouth Marathon participant, Joel, to tell us what motivates him to stay healthy and active in preparation for the big day…  

“I’m running in this year’s Marathon for Prostate Cancer UK and my goal is to raise at least £500.

The reason why I have decided to raise money for this charity is my Dad got diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last year, it was a complete shock to the family but luckily it was caught at an early stage. He received the necessary treatment and was regularly monitored and thankfully has now been given the all clear, but it could have been a lot worse.

One in eight men will get prostate cancer and the disease kills one man every hour in the UK. Prostate Cancer UK fights to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life. They support men and provide vital information and find answers by funding research into causes and treatments.

What motivates me is being aware of how much treatment was given to my dad when he had cancer which not only benefited him but also helped him overcome his illness. If I can raise as much as I can to help others beat this cancer then it will make me feel very proud.

My diet has been fairly strict over the last few months, making sure I am eating healthily in the build up to the Marathon to ensure I reach my own personal goal of beating my time. I completed this year’s London Marathon in 3 hours and 54 minutes, so if I can do better than that I will be very happy!”
